is founder and Chief Medical Officer of Kartini Clinic. Dr. O'Toole is a board certified pediatrician and has been in private pediatric practice for more than two decades. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Medicine, NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), and a certified IAEDP provider. She also has a master's degree in public health (international health). As well as being an avid gardener and bookworm, she is the proud parent of four grown children and grandmother of three.

Naghmeh Moshtael, MD, CEDS

is Kartini Clinic's Medical Director. A board certified pediatrician, Dr. Moshtael is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She completed her pediatric residency at OHSU and served as Chief Resident there until joining us full time in 2006. She became Kartini Clinic's first full partner in 2009. Dr Moshtael holds a master's degree in international studies and community health development. She is the proud parent of a daughter, and her hobbies include gardening, knitting and traveling.

Janiece E. DeSocio, PhD, PMHNP, RN

is a licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and is board certified as both a family psychiatric nurse practitioner and a clinical specialist in child/adolescent psychiatric mental health. At Kartini Clinic Janiece meets with patients and parents for psychiatric evaluations and consults with the team about medication management. She is coordinator of Kartini research activities and has published a textbook chapter on eating disorders and numerous articles on psychiatric issues facing children and adolescents. In addition to her work at Kartini Clinic, Janiece is Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Associate Professor for the College of Nursing at Seattle University.

is Kartini Clinic's chief operating officer. She worked in a general pediatric practice for eleven years before helping found Kartini Clinic in 1998. Shanna has a Bachelor of Science from Portland State University and is the mother of three.  When not chasing after one of her children, she and her large Labrador Retriever can be found frolicking at one of the many parks in the Portland area.

is our Clinical Director and the primary therapist of Kartini's College-Age Intensive Outpatient Program. A Portland native she developed a strong sense of compassion balanced with a healthy amount of sarcastic wit. In college, she enjoyed studying psychology and clinical social work and traveling the world. She enjoys listening to her extensive collection of vinyl records and cassette tapes, teaching herself to skateboard, and spending way too much time at the zoo with her young son. She's been with Kartini Clinic since 2003 and loves working with our kids and young adults.

is one of our family therapists. Raised in Connecticut, she earned a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Southern Connecticut State University. Leslie has been a therapist for 16 years, working almost exclusively with eating disorders. She enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 sons, and their dog Tulip.

is our individual therapist. Bart is a licensed clinical social worker and has many years experience utilizing hypnotherapy with individuals, including children and adolescents. A notable composer and saxophonist, Bart has his own way with Over The Rainbow.

is another member of Kartini's “Reed Mafia”, receiving his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Reed College in 1994 and a Master's from Monterey Institute of International Studies. After stints in New York and London, he returned in 2003 to the greener pastures of the Pacific Northwest. After working in various positions at Kartini Morgan was appointed CEO in 2008.

is a milieu therapist working in our Day Treatment Unit. Her work experience includes working with adult males at a forensic psychiatric hospital in Napa and locally with adolescents in residential drug and alcohol treatment. She received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Regis University in CO. and a Master’s in Art Therapy Counseling from Marylhurst University in OR. Her free time is filled with reading, cooking, friends, laughing, and various artistic pursuits.

has been a pediatric nurse for Legacy Emanuel/Randall Children’s Hospital for 20 years.  She currently is the Pediatric Nurse Case Manager/Care Coordinator for all Eating Disorder Patients who are hospitalized at Randall Children’s specializing in the Kartini approach to treatment.  Sherrill has worked with the Kartini team for over 10 years and is the staff liaison between the hospital and clinic.  She can be contacted at (503)276-8752 for any questions related to treatment while in the hospital.

is one of the founders of Kartini Clinic. After gamely serving in many capacities Steve retired from active duty in 2011 but continues to assist as the Clinic's legal counsel. Steve graduated from Reed College and Hastings College of Law. He is the parent and step-parent of 3 daughters and a grown son. When he’s not in the Kartini Clinic, he paints pictures and writes poems.

is the Lead Milieu Counselor at Kartini Clinic.  She earned a Psychology degree from Westminster College in Missouri and moved to Portland in 1996.  Amy resides with her son Beckham, boxer Ruby and her therapy hamster named Pansy. Amy enjoys almost anything outdoors; particularly exploring Oregon's geology.  She spends most of her free time on rock collecting adventures.

She grew up in the corn fields of Oregon and after a brief stint in San Francisco moved to Portland. In her free time she enjoys hiking, crossword puzzles, playing with Chachi the dalmatian, drinking delicious Portland coffee, and navigating through life on her trusty bicycle.

is our movement therapist. Dena has a degree in recreational therapy from Arizona State University.  Since moving to Portland in 2005, she's become a certified yoga instructor, lover of night bicycle rides, and a hammock-swinging book reader.  She has a husband, two teens, and a cat who all hang out with her on the front porch to watch their neighbor pogo stick in his penguin pajamas.  When she is not being a voyeur of Portland’s oddities, she is singing with a cellist, drinking tea with friends, and conjuring up a new way to have fun with family, yoga students and Kartini's kids.

is our Director of Human Resources and executive assistant to our two pediatricians. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts and received her Master's of International Communication at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. After finishing her degree at Macquarie she traveled around the world and has now returned to Portland with her husband to be closer to family. She loves being outside in the sun, traveling, going on adventures, playing with her dog, and cuddling her two children.

She graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Portland and has worked in the design industry for over 5 years.  She has been an active volunteer for more than 4 years at a local hospital's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit, where she has the opportunity to practice art therapy, play games, and console patients and their families.  It was her volunteer service that truly inspired her to work with children.  When she is not working or volunteering, Desiree spends time at the beach or on the dance floor with her husband, cutting a rug to ballroom and westcoast swing.

is one of our Family Therapists.  Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Heather was brought to Oregon in pursuit of her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Portland.  She stayed to obtain her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Pacific University, and closed on a home purchase during finals week, making her placement here more permanent.  Prior to joining the Kartini team, Heather worked with children, adolescents, and young adults for over ten years in a variety of programs including residential, day treatment, therapeutic school, and foster care.  Her responsibilities in those programs have ranged from direct care to program management and clinical supervision. Heather spends her free time visiting with family and friends in any forumShe’ll consider anything fair game for getting together with loved ones from hiking or road trips with her corgi (Sam) in tow, to playing video-games, watching movies, dancing, or making it a karaoke night.

is one of our medical assistants.  Lorie is an Oregon native who grew up in Gresham. She graduated from Pioneer Pacific College with a degree in Medical Assisting in 2012. Most of her time is spent with her boyfriend, Tanner, and two dogs, Rambo and Betty, or with family. Lorie loves going for long drives to the beach, muscle cars, and 80's hair metal like RATT.

is a Milieu Counselor at Kartini Clinic. She attended Western Washington University where she received a degree in Psychology. After graduation, Katie moved to Seattle and worked with eating disorder clients in both inpatient and day treatment settings.  Loving the eccentric and whimsical Portland culture, she is happy to be living here and excited to be part of the reputable treatment team at Kartini Clinic. In her free time you can find Katie at the local tea shop, hiking with friends, making her own jewelry, hula hooping, taking pictures, often getting lost, and trying to keep Portland as weird as she can.

Lindsay grew up in Indiana and attended Purdue University, earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Public Horticulture.  In 2006 she packed all of her belongings into her car and headed to Portland.  She spends most of my time hanging out with her sweetheart, Sean, and their two cats, Hooligan and Lucile. She enjoys listening to music, singing, dancing, working on puzzles, and taking advantage of all that Portland's culinary world has to offer.

She also obtained the Eating Disorders Certificate at Lewis & Clark College through continuing education.  Prior to joining the Kartini team, Katie primarily worked in outpatient services with young adults, children, and families.  In her spare time, she enjoys being active outdoors (especially when there’s a hint of sunshine!); spending time with friends; and cheering for the Volunteers during football season.

Recently joined the Kartini Clinic as Milieu therapist in the Day Treatment program. She grew up both domestically and internationally and completed her Masters in Counseling-Psychology at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. Her work experience includes five years of working in residential treatment with severely emotionally disturbed adolescents. She has a great passion for working with children and teenagers and is excited to continue her professional career at Kartini! In her free time she enjoys a variety of outdoor activities as well as spending time with close friends and family members.

is Kartini's Parent Resource Coordinator. Having a daughter with an eating disorder and as a patient at the Kartini Clinic Jean has "been there - done that". Jean is thrilled to be helping families on their own journey with an eating disorder, offering support and help as needed. As a native Bostonian, Jean and her family have calledOregonhome for over 20 years. In her spare time, you can find her volunteering for local organizations, developing new recipes for the Meal Plan, and sewing for family and friends.

is our Medical Administrative Assistant. She was born in Sandpoint, Idaho. Her family moved to Newberg, Oregon when she was 2 years old, where they still live today. She is a Certified Nurse Assistant and has worked the last ten years in direct patient care with children, adolescents, and young adults. She is passionate about serving the younger population in any capacity. Amanda loves cooking, watching movies, making hand-made cards, visiting her family in Newberg every Sunday, and taking trips to the Oregon coast with her husband.

is our Intake Coordinator. A former bilingual elementary school teacher, she left teaching to pursue her passion as a social worker and graduated with her MSW from Portland State University; specializing in direct practice with children and families. Natalie is excited to have found her niche in intake, and enjoys meeting individuals and families in their most vulnerable moments and helping direct them along the appropriate continuum of care for their unique circumstances. As a native Oregonian, Natalie enjoys hiking, bundling up to visit the ocean, and diffusing awkward situations with her dry sense of humor. Additionally, when she isn't working in intake, Natalie moonlights as a karaoke guru, ketchup connoisseur, and "Auntie America" to the cutest nephews and nieces on the face of this planet.
