Julie O'Toole, MD, MPH
is founder and medical director of Kartini Clinic. She is a board certified pediatrician. She has been in private pediatric practice for the better part of two decades. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Medicine, AED (Academy for Eating Disorders), NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), and EDAP (Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention). She also has a master's degree in public health (international health). As well as being an avid gardener and bookworm, she is the proud parent of four grown children.
Naghmeh Moshtael, MD
is a board certified pediatrician, and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Moshtael completed her pediatric residency at OHSU and served as Chief Resident there until joining us full time in 2006. She became Kartini Clinic's first full partner in 2009. Dr Moshtael holds a master's degree in international studies and community health development. She is the proud parent of a daughter, and her hobbies include gardening, knitting and traveling.
Janiece E. DeSocio, PhD, PMHNP, RN
is a licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and is board certified as both a family psychiatric nurse practitioner and a clinical specialist in child/adolescent psychiatric mental health. At Kartini Clinic Janiece meets with patients and parents for psychiatric evaluations and consults with the team about medication management. She is coordinator of Kartini research activities and has published a textbook chapter on eating disorders and numerous articles on psychiatric issues facing children and adolescents. In addition to her work at Kartini Clinic, Janiece is Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Associate Professor for the College of Nursing at Seattle University.
is Kartini Clinic's chief operating officer. She worked in a general pediatric practice for eleven years before helping found Kartini Clinic in 1998. Shanna has a Bachelor of Science from Portland State University and is the mother of three wonderful children: Sean Patrick, Logan, and Vivian, who was born 9/10/10. When not chasing after one of her children, she and her large Labrador Retriever can be found frolicking at one of the many parks in the Portland area.
Jade Buchanan, LCSW
is our director of Clinical Service and lead therapist of Karitni's Intensive Outpatient Program. A Portland native she developed a strong sense of compassion balanced with a healthy amount of sarcastic wit. In college, she enjoyed studying psychology and clinical social work and traveling the world. She enjoys listening to her extensive collection of vinyl records and cassette tapes, teaching herself to skateboard, and spending way too much time at the zoo with her young son. She's been with Kartini Clinic since 2003 and loves working with our young adults.
Leslie Weisner, LMFT
is one of our family therapists. Raised in Connecticut, she earned a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Southern Connecticut State University. Leslie has been a therapist for 16 years, working almost exclusively with eating disorders. She enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 sons, and their dog Tulip.
Jayotta J. Feimoefiafi, LCSW
is a group and Day Treatment Unit milieu therapist at Kartini Clinic. She has been a therapist in the Portland Community for the last 12 years. When not providing therapy for children and adolescents, working on home improvements, gardening, knitting, or enjoying her three beautiful and ACTIVE young children, she uses those 7 minutes to engage in her passion for African and Polynesian dance. She fondly remembers her undergraduate days at Spelman College in Atlanta GA, and received a graduate degree from Portland State University. She and her husband occasionally find the time for sleep, family outings, and participation in Polynesian community events. She can be identified by her sense of humor, and her unsolicited, zealous offers to brandish pictures of her children.
Bart Walsh, LCSW
is our individual therapist. Bart is a licensed clinical social worker and has many years experience utilizing hypnotherapy with individuals, including children and adolescents. A notable composer and saxophonist, Bart has his own way with Over The Rainbow.
is another member of Kartini's “Reed Mafia”, receiving his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Reed College in 1994 and a Master's from Monterey Institute of International Studies. After stints in New York and London, he returned in 2003 to the greener pastures of the Pacific Northwest. After working in various positions at the Clinic Morgan was appointed CEO in 2008.
Kathy Franz, LPC, CADCI
is one of our family therapists. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Sciences from Oregon State University and continued her education at Lewis & Clark College, earning her Master's of Arts in Counseling Psychology; Marriage and Family Therapy. She is an Oregon Board certified Licensed Professional Counselor and is Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor I. In her free time, Kathy enjoys spending time with her husband and two young girls; their favorite family activities include hiking, gardening, reading, and going to the zoo.
Jessica Stumpf, MA
is a milieu therapist working in our Day Treatment Unit. Her work experience includes working with adult males at a forensic psychiatric hospital in Napa and locally with adolescents in residential drug and alcohol treatment. She received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Regis University in CO. and a Master’s in Art Therapy Counseling from Marylhurst University in OR. Her free time is filled with reading, cooking, friends, laughing, and various artistic pursuits.
has been a pediatric nurse for Legacy Emanuel/Randall Children’s Hospital for 20 years. She currently is the Pediatric Nurse Case Manager/Care Coordinator for all Eating Disorder Patients who are hospitalized at Randall Children’s specializing in the Kartini approach to treatment. Sherrill has worked with the Kartini team for over 10 years and is the staff liaison between the hospital and clinic. Most recently from Sonora, California, Pam comes to us after 12 years as a classroom teacher. She received a Bachelor's degree in Art Education from San Francisco State and Waldorf Teacher Training from Rudolf Steiner College. She and her husband, Jeff, (and Mojo, the miracle cat) are classic bookworms who also enjoy exploring the Northwest, making art, and playing music.
is our office manager. She grew up in Boise, Idaho and moved to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music and traveling.
is one of the founders of Kartini Clinic. After gamely serving in many capacities Steve retired from active duty in 2011 but continues to assist as the Clinic's legal counsel. Steve graduated from Reed College and Hastings College of Law. He is the parent and step-parent of 3 daughters and a grown son. When he’s not in the Kartini Clinic, he paints pictures and writes poems.
is the lead day treatment counselor at Kartini Clinic. She earned a Psychology degree from Westminster College in Missouri and moved to Oregon ten years ago. Amy has one son and a wild, Boxer named Dahlia. In her free time Amy enjoys gardening, hiking, painting and rafting.
is one of our day treatment counselors and clinical authorization coordinators. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She grew up in the corn fields of Oregon and after a brief stint in San Francisco moved to Portland. In her free time she enjoys hiking, crossword puzzles, playing with Chachi the dalmatian, drinking delicious Portland coffee, and navigating through life on her trusty bicycle.
is our movement therapist. Dena has a degree in recreational therapy from Arizona State University. Since moving to Portland in 2005, she's become a certified yoga instructor, lover of night bicycle rides, and a hammock-swinging book reader. She has a husband, two teens, and a cat who all hang out with her on the front porch to watch their neighbor pogo stick in his penguin pajamas. When she is not being a voyeur of Portland’s oddities, she is singing with a cellist, drinking tea with friends, and conjuring up a new way to have fun with family, yoga students and Kartini's kids.
is our patient accounts representative. She is a native Ohioan who came to Portland with a U-haul truck, her shelter dog, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education from Ohio University. When she is not working or cleaning up her dog’s messes, you can find her challenging people to a game of pool, doing outdoorsy things, photographing, or watching really bad television.
is our Director or Human Resources and executive assistant to our two pediatricians. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts and received her Master's of International Communication at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. After finishing her degree at Macquarie she traveled around the world and has now returned to Portland with her husband to be closer to family. She loves being outside in the sun, traveling, going on adventures, playing with her dog, and cuddling her two children.
Judy Potts MA/ABS
is an adjunct Milieu Therapist in Kartini's Day Treatment program. She received a Bachelor's degree in Social Psychology from Brandeis University, and a Master's degree in Counseling from City University of Seattle. She has lived in Portland since 2001 and worked in the field of eating disorders for most of that time. Outside of the working world, Judy loves spending time with her daughter and grandson. She is a classical pianist and can be found playing and teaching music, dancing, gardening, and practicing her hula hoop skills.
is our administrative assistant. Hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana, with a Public Relations degree from Valparaiso University. Tony migrated west to serve a year as an AmeriCorps member, working as the development coordinator for a non-profit organization in SE Portland. 4 years later Tony finds himself still enjoying everything that Portland has to offer. In his free time, he enjoys bopping around town on his faithful bike, spoiling his feline beauty, Priscilla, and continuing to build his right brain cells by creatively engaging in artistic and crafty projects.
is one of our Medical Assistants. As a recent graduate from Reed College with a Bachelor of Arts in History, she is proud to be a member of Kartini Clinic's Reed Coalition. Although she is a Long Island native, Maya hit the Oregon trail to attend college. Four years later, she is pleased to remain in the land of gray skies and lush greenery. She has adapted to the culture of the Pacific Northwest -- you can spot her wearing clogs, working in her vegetable garden, picnicking in Portland's parks, reading stacks of novels, and splashing through puddles.
is our office assistant. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Portland and has worked in the design industry for over 5 years. She has been an active volunteer for more than 4 years at a local hospital's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit, where she has the opportunity to practice art therapy, play games, and console patients and their families. It was her volunteer service that truly inspired her to work with children. When she is not working or volunteering, Desiree spends time at the beach or on the dance floor with her fiancé, cutting a rug to ballroom and westcoast swing.
Heather Mirasol, LPC
is one of our Family Therapists. Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Heather was brought to Oregon in pursuit of her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Portland. She stayed to obtain her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Pacific University, and closed on a home purchase during finals week, making her placement here more permanent. Prior to joining the Kartini team, Heather worked with children, adolescents, and young adults for over ten years in a variety of programs including residential, day treatment, therapeutic school, and foster care. Her responsibilities in those programs have ranged from direct care to program management and clinical supervision. Heather spends her free time visiting with family and friends in any forum. She’ll consider anything fair game for getting together with loved ones from hiking or road trips with her corgi (Sam) in tow, to playing video-games, watching movies, dancing, or making it a karaoke night.
Aimee Polzin, LPC
is a family therapist at Kartini Clinic. After spending a part of her childhood in the east coast, she returned to the Northwest. She earned her Master’s degree from Lewis and Clark College in Counseling Psychology. Aimee's interests include having quality time with friends, relaxing at the beach, but mostly she enjoys spending her free time with her husband, two kids, and her dog, Jenny.
is a Milieu Counselor at Kartini Clinic. She attended Western Washington University where she received a degree in Psychology. After graduation, Katie moved to Seattle and worked with eating disorder clients in both inpatient and day treatment settings. Loving the eccentric and whimsical Portland culture, she is happy to be living here and excited to be part of the reputable treatment team at Kartini Clinic. In her free time you can find Katie at the local tea shop, hiking with friends, making her own jewelry, hula hooping, taking pictures, often getting lost, and trying to keep Portland as weird as she can.
is one of our medical assistants. She has called Portland home since moving here seven years ago to attend Lewis and Clark College for a BA in Sociology/Anthropology. Born and raised in Michigan, she is now a true Pacific Northwest convert who loves rain boots, cloudy skies, and puddles. In her non-work hours you can find her dutifully spoiling her two cats, cooking gourmet foods, and taking way too many photos.
is one of our medical assistants. Lorie is an Oregon native who grew up in Gresham. She graduated from Pioneer Pacific College with a degree in Medical Assisting in 2012. Most of her time is spent with her boyfriend, Tanner, and two dogs, Rambo and Betty, or with family. Lorie loves going for long drives to the beach, muscle cars, and 80's hair metal like RATT.
