Food Phobia

Kartini Clinic has been treating food phobia since we began seeing patients in 1998. Food phobia is characterized by a sudden onset of food phobia symptoms such as refusal to chew or swallow any food or liquids, spitting of food, and a fear of choking.

Food phobia responds well to a mixture of medical interventions to ensure proper nutrition, and psychotherapy to alleviate anxiety around the ingestion of food and liquids. Unlike many other types of eating disorders, food phobia can be effectively cured. A full and complete resumption of a child's regular eating patterns and preferences is the goal of Kartini Clinic's treatment program.

Kartini Clinic has recently launched a new Food Phobia program that incorporates our many years of clinical experience of this condition with a new and innovative approach to treatment. Kartini Clinic's program, the nation's first standardized pediatric treatment protocol for food phobia, focuses on involving the family in care and removing the patient as quickly as possible from an inpatient setting. Please see our Food Phobia Treatment page for more information.
