Julie O’Toole, MD, MPH CEDS
is founder and Chief Medical Officer of Kartini Clinic. Dr. O’Toole is a board certified pediatrician and has been in private pediatric practice for more than two decades. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Medicine, NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), and a certified IAEDP provider. She also has a master’s degree in public health (international health). As well as being an avid gardener and bookworm, she is the proud parent of four grown children and grandmother of three active boys and one delightful little girl.
Naghmeh Moshtael, MD, CEDS
is Kartini Clinic’s Medical Director. A board certified pediatrician, Dr. Moshtael is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a certified IAEDP provider. She completed her pediatric residency at Oregon Health & Science University and served as Chief Resident there until joining us full time in 2006. She became Kartini Clinic’s first full partner in 2009. Dr Moshtael holds a master’s degree in international studies and community health development. She is the proud parent of a daughter, and her hobbies include gardening, knitting and traveling around the world with her husband and child.
is Kartini Clinic’s Chief Operating Officer. She worked in a general pediatric practice for eleven years before helping to found Kartini Clinic in 1998. Shanna has a Bachelor of Science from Portland State University. She enjoys taking turns dancing in the rain with one of her five children and exploring Portland’s many parks. The most recent additions to the family are two rescue cats, Malcolm and Luna.
is our Director of Human Resources. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and received her Master’s of International Communication at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. After finishing her degree at Macquarie she traveled around the world and has now returned to Portland with her husband to be closer to family. She loves being outside in the sun, traveling, going on adventures, playing with her dog, and cuddling her two children.
Jade Buchanan, LCSW
is our Clinical Director. A Portland native she developed a strong sense of compassion balanced with a healthy amount of sarcastic wit. In college, she enjoyed studying psychology and clinical social work and traveling the world. She enjoys listening to her extensive collection of vinyl records and cassette tapes, teaching herself to skateboard, and spending way too much time at the zoo with her young son. She’s been with Kartini Clinic since 2003 and loves working with our kids and young adults.
Sherrill Gandsey RN
is the clinic's Program Nurse. Before joining the Kartini team, she was a pediatric nurse for Legacy Emanuel/Randall Children’s Hospital for over 20 years. Sherrill has worked with the Kartini team for over 10 years and is the staff liaison between the hospital and clinic. In her spare time, Sherrill is a Disaster Nurse volunteer for the American Red Cross and most recently assisted back east with families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Her hobbies are dancing, tennis, boating and most important spending time with her family.
Janiece E. DeSocio, PhD, PMHNP, RN
is a licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and is board certified as both a family psychiatric nurse practitioner and a clinical specialist in child/adolescent psychiatric mental health. At Kartini Clinic Janiece meets with patients and parents for psychiatric evaluations and consults with the team about medication management. She is coordinator of Kartini research activities and has published a textbook chapter on eating disorders and numerous articles on psychiatric issues facing children and adolescents. In addition to her work at Kartini Clinic, Janiece is Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Associate Professor for the College of Nursing at Seattle University.
Leslie Weisner, LMFT
is a Family Therapist. Raised in Connecticut, she earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Southern Connecticut State University. Leslie has been a therapist for 16 years, working almost exclusively with eating disorders. She enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 sons, and their dog Tulip.
Katie Wargo LCSW
is an Intake Coordinator who received her BA in Psychology at The University of Tennessee and completed graduate studies in Social Work at Portland State University. She also obtained the Eating Disorders Certificate at Lewis & Clark College through continuing education. Prior to joining the Kartini team, Katie primarily worked in outpatient services with young adults, children, and families. In her spare time, she enjoys being active outdoors (especially when there’s a hint of sunshine!); spending time with friends; and cheering for the Volunteers during football season.
Jessica Stumpf, MA
is the Art Therapist working in our Day Treatment Unit. Her work experience includes working with adult males at a forensic psychiatric hospital in Napa and locally with adolescents in residential drug and alcohol treatment. She received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Regis University in CO. and a Master’s in Art Therapy Counseling from Marylhurst University in OR. Her free time is filled with reading, cooking, friends, laughing, and various artistic pursuits.
Bart Walsh, LCSW
is our Individual Therapist. Bart is a licensed clinical social worker and has many years experience utilizing hypnotherapy with individuals, including children and adolescents. A notable composer and saxophonist, Bart has his own way with Over The Rainbow.
is another member of Kartini’s “Reed Mafia”, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Reed College in 1994 and a Master’s from Monterey Institute of International Studies. After stints in New York and London, he returned in 2003 to the greener pastures of the Pacific Northwest. After working in various positions at Kartini Morgan was appointed CEO in 2008.
is the Director of our Business Office. She grew up in Boise, Idaho and moved to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music and traveling.
is one of the founders of Kartini Clinic. After gamely serving in many capacities Steve retired from active duty in 2011 but continues to assist as the Clinic’s legal counsel. Steve graduated from Reed College and Hastings College of Law. He is the parent and step-parent of 3 daughters and a grown son. When he’s not in the Kartini Clinic, he paints pictures and writes poems.
is the Milieu Manager at Kartini Clinic. She earned a Psychology degree from Westminster College in Missouri and moved to Portland in 1996. Amy resides with her son Beckham, boxer Ruby and her therapy hamster named Pansy. Amy enjoys almost anything outdoors; particularly exploring Oregon’s geology. She spends most of her free time on rock collecting adventures.
is our Kitchen Coordinator. Lindsay grew up in Indiana and attended Purdue University, earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Public Horticulture. In 2006 she packed all of her belongings into her car and headed to Portland. She spends most of her time hanging out with her sweetheart, Sean, and their two cats, Hooligan and Lucile. She enjoys listening to music, singing, dancing, working on puzzles, and and wowing everyone with her extensive knowledge of song lyrics.
is the Nutrition Counselor at Kartini Clinic. As a young adult she went to Western Culinary Institute in her native Portland, Oregon to begin a career in food. Annastacia has decades of cooking experience and also studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City, where she began incorporating food as medicine into her life and career. Annastacia lives in North Portland with her partner, son, dog, and two cats. When not working you will find her outside on an adventure with her family, biking through town or to the river, or working on in-home cooking projects.
is Kartini's Utilization Review Specialist. An Ohio native, Ashley worked in the design industry in New York City between college and graduate school. She also taught college Art History before spending several years in the health insurance field. She enjoys reading, cooking, playing with her dog, and exploring the Pacific Northwest.
is Kartini’s Parent Resource Coordinator. Having a daughter with an eating disorder and as a patient at the Kartini Clinic Jean has “been there - done that”. Jean is thrilled to be helping families on their own journey with an eating disorder, offering support and help as needed. As a native Bostonian, Jean and her family have called Oregon home for over 20 years. In her spare time, you can find her volunteering for local organizations, developing new recipes for the Meal Plan, and sewing for family and friends.
Is a Milieu Counselor at the Kartini Clinic. She attended Washington State University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Grace grew up on a farm in a small town in Washington before briefly living in Seattle, and then finding her way down to Portland in 2013. In her free time she enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest, consuming copious amounts of caffeine, hiking, knitting, yard sales, and volunteering at various non-profits in the Portland Metro area.
is our Medical Administrative Assistant. She was born in Sandpoint, Idaho. Her family moved to Newberg, Oregon when she was 2 years old, where they still live today. She is a Certified Nurse Assistant and has worked the last ten years in direct patient care with children, adolescents, and young adults. She is passionate about serving the younger population in any capacity. Amanda loves cooking, watching movies, making hand-made cards, visiting her family in Newberg every Sunday, and taking trips to the Oregon coast with her husband.
Cristy Coffman MA
is our Intensive Outpatient Therapist. She earned her Masters in Art Therapy and Counseling at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since graduating she has worked in various settings as an Individual and Family therapist as well as incorporating art therapy into her practice. Outside of work she spends her time painting and being creative. She also enjoys spending time with her friends and with her big dog Aberdeen.
is the Movement Counselor at Kartini Clinic. A Cascadia native, she grew up in Vancouver, and attended the University of Washington in Seattle. She has enjoyed working and volunteering with high-needs youth, including young adults coming out of foster care and experiencing homelessness. After living and traveling in the U.S. and abroad, she has resettled in Milwaukie with her spouse and child. Kaisa spends her time practicing and sharing yoga, growing and cooking whole foods, and riding her bike to as many places as she can peddle to.
Kathryn is Kartini's Medical Administrative Assistant. She is a Washington coast native who has lived in Portland for several years now pursuing her studies in psychology and creative writing. She loves to travel the world with her adored (and much more adventurous!) sisters, but also enjoys curling up at home with a favorite book and her ridiculous husky. Kathryn has been a devoted “horse girl” since birth, and spends as much time as possible schooling and showing dressage with her beloved Friesian mare, Zetha. Kartini Clinic has long held a special place in Kathryn’s heart and she is delighted to be a part of the team!
is a Medical Assistant. She was born in Portland, Oregon but shortly after moved to Nottingham, England where a love for travel and culture developed. Oregon, however, will always be her home. When Emilie moved back she attended Portland State University where she majored in public health and acquired a bachelors degree in health sciences. She has a passion for health education, specifically maternal/child health. In her free time she enjoys baking, travelling, and relaxing at home with her dog Gabe.
is the School Liaison at Kartini Clinic. She originally hails from sunny Santa Barbara but now calls Portland home after being here for over 2 years. Jordan graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in Political Science and History. Her love of educating and serving our youth has brought her to Kartini after years of working in schools and in the non-profit sector. In her free time, Jordan can be found exploring the outdoors, cross-country skiing, riding her bike, berry picking and going on adventures with her boyfriend, friends and family.
is one of our medical assistants. Catherine was born and raised in Detroit, MI and moved to Portland in 2006 to be close to family. She has a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing and Linguistics and obtained her certification as a medical assistant in 2010. She has had a lifelong interest in healthcare and in the past has enjoyed working closely with children and young adults in orthopedic and primary care settings. In her free time she enjoys hiking, writing and publishing, collecting vinyl records and live music.
is an Account Representative in the Business Office. She was adopted from China at 2 and has lived in Portland ever since. She has always had an interest in working within the medical field and is currently a student pursuing a degree in medicine and psychology. In her free time, LeeAnn enjoys dancing, playing guitar, spending time with friends and family and going on spontaneous road trips.
Emily R. E. Burnett
is an Account Representative in the Business Office. She has a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and has begun coursework on a Master's in Public Health. She is also a professional choral musician and pianist. In her spare time, Emily enjoys spending time with her husband and three young daughters, and hiking around the Pacific Northwest.
is a Milieu Counselor at Kartini Clinic. She is a Seattle native and recently joined the Portland community. She attended the University of Washington where she double majored in Psychology and Law, Societies and Justice. After college she worked closely with children with behavioral disorders before joining the Kartini team. She is currently a graduate student at Portland State University pursing her dream of being a pediatric therapist. In her free time, you can find her hiking the PNW, exploring Portland restaurants, and spending quality time with family and friends.
is a Milieu Therapist at the Kartini Clinic. She was born on the East Coast and grew up in Germany. After completing high school in Germany, she traveled along the west coast before finally settling in the Portland area. She attended the University of Washington where she gained a bachelors degree in Psychology and graduated with a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lewis and Clark College. During college she worked closely with children and families in a private home setting before joining the Kartini team. Given her unique cultural background, she is bilingual in both English and German. In her free time, she likes to travel, adventure across the pacific northwest, explore Portland restaurants, and spend time with family, friends, and her furry feline.
is a Medical Receptionist at Kartini Clinic. She was born in Bend, Oregon and moved to Portland to attend school at Portland State University, where she double majored in Russian and Sociology. Traveling to new places and learning about new cultures is one of her favorite pastimes. Stephanie can generally be found with her nose in a book, entertaining her 7 nieces and nephews, or exploring closer to home.
Lisa Peacock, LMFT
is a Family Therapist at Kartini Clinic. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in both Oregon and California. She is Founder and Executive Director of The Peacock Foundation an animal assisted therapy program for children in Los Angeles, CA. She is the proud trainer of a menagerie of animals all of whom visit the clients at Kartini Clinic to provide Animal Assisted Interventions.
Josh Barrett, MA
is a Milieu Therapist in the partial hospitalization program. He earned a Bachelor’s in Studio Art & Graphic Design at Western Washington University in WA, and a Master in Theological Studies at Regent College in Vancouver, BC. He has been working in the counseling/behavioral health field since 2010. He has worked with adults and adolescents in both outpatient and residential treatment settings. Josh lives in North Portland with his wife and two kids. He enjoys reading, yoga, podcasts, playing with his kids and watching cartoons (with and without his kids).
is one of Kartini Clinic's Medical Receptionists. Originally from Hawaii, she attended the University of Washington in Seattle and now joins us in Portland to get her feet wet in the medical field before pursuing a Physician's Assistant degree. Most recently a social worker, Sandra is passionate about helping people. An adrenaline junkie at heart, she loves to travel, explore museums, get lost in ruins and jump off cliffs. She's been in many theater productions, a 50/60's cover band and will karaoke your socks off.
is our HR Administrative Assistant. She grew up in Mexico and moved to the states with her family when she was 8 years old. She studied Human Development and Psychology at UC Davis and after a few years working as an early childhood educator, is now pursuing a career in the health field. When not at Kartini you can probably find her climbing walls, rocks, and occasionally, mountains. She also enjoys drawing, wood burning, and gardening.
is Kartini Clinic's Cook. She is an avid reader. Anything she can get her hands on will eventually be read and possibly reread if time allows. She reads anything from sci-fi to historical fiction and loves books about living in foreign countries. These books fuel her love of travel. Caitlin grew up on a small cherry orchard that her grandfather owned. Growing up next door to her grandparents allowed for an education in cooking and baking. By an early age Caitlin was cooking for her family or helping her grandmothers with holiday baking. Living on an orchard encouraged her to learn about food. She maintains a garden every year and keeps chickens for fresh eggs. After moving to Portland Caitlin trained under a head baker and went on to manage a bakery for many years.
