Julie O’Toole, MD, MPH CEDS
is founder and Chief Medical Officer of Kartini Clinic. Dr. O’Toole is a board certified pediatrician and has been in private pediatric practice for more than two decades. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Medicine, NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), and a certified IAEDP provider. She also has a master’s degree in public health (international health). As well as being an avid gardener and bookworm, she is the proud parent of four grown children and grandmother of three active boys and one delightful little girl.
Naghmeh Moshtael, MD, CEDS
is Kartini Clinic’s Medical Director. A board certified pediatrician, Dr. Moshtael is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a certified IAEDP provider. She completed her pediatric residency at Oregon Health & Science University and served as Chief Resident there until joining us full time in 2006. She became Kartini Clinic’s first full partner in 2009. Dr Moshtael holds a master’s degree in international studies and community health development. She is the proud parent of a daughter, and her hobbies include gardening, knitting and traveling around the world with her husband and child.
is another member of Kartini’s “Reed Mafia”, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Reed College in 1994 and a Master’s from Monterey Institute of International Studies. After stints in New York and London, he returned in 2003 to the greener pastures of the Pacific Northwest. After working in various positions at Kartini Morgan was appointed CEO in 2008.
is Kartini Clinic’s Chief Operating Officer. She worked in a general pediatric practice for eleven years before helping to found Kartini Clinic in 1998. Shanna has a Bachelor of Science from Portland State University. She enjoys taking turns dancing in the rain with her children and exploring Portland’s many parks with her energetic dog, Harley Quinn. The most recent additions to the family are two rescue cats, Malcolm and Luna.
is our Director of Intake and Human Resources. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and received her Master’s of International Communication at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. After finishing her degree at Macquarie she traveled around the world and has now returned to Portland with her husband to be closer to family. She loves being outside in the sun, traveling, going on adventures, playing with her dog, and cuddling her two children.
is the Director of our Business Office. She grew up in Boise, Idaho and moved to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music and traveling.
is one of the founders of Kartini Clinic. After gamely serving in many capacities Steve retired from active duty in 2011 but continues to assist as the Clinic’s legal counsel. Steve graduated from Reed College and Hastings College of Law. He is the parent and step-parent of 3 daughters and a grown son. When he’s not in the Kartini Clinic, he paints pictures and writes poems.
Sherrill Gandsey RN
is the clinic's Program Nurse. Before joining the Kartini team, she was a pediatric nurse for Legacy Emanuel/Randall Children’s Hospital for over 20 years. Sherrill has worked with the Kartini team for over 10 years and is the staff liaison between the hospital and clinic. In her spare time, Sherrill is a Disaster Nurse volunteer for the American Red Cross and most recently assisted back east with families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Her hobbies are dancing, tennis, boating and most important spending time with her family.
Janiece E. DeSocio, PhD, PMHNP, RN
is a licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and is board certified as both a family psychiatric nurse practitioner and a clinical specialist in child/adolescent psychiatric mental health. At Kartini Clinic Janiece meets with patients and parents for psychiatric evaluations and consults with the team about medication management. She is coordinator of Kartini research activities and has published a textbook chapter on eating disorders and numerous articles on psychiatric issues facing children and adolescents. In addition to her work at Kartini Clinic, Janiece is Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Associate Professor for the College of Nursing at Seattle University.
Leslie Weisner, LMFT
is a Family Therapist. Raised in Connecticut, she earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Southern Connecticut State University. Leslie has been a therapist for 16 years, working almost exclusively with eating disorders. She enjoys spending time with her husband, 2 sons, and their dog Tulip.
Samara Stevens, ND
is Kartini Clinic’s Clinical Nutritionist. A Naturopathic Doctor and Oregon native, Dr. Stevens graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine here in Portland and has a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Oregon State University. She is a board member of IAEDP’s Willamette Valley Chapter and has worked with adolescents and adults in both residential and intensive outpatient treatment settings. In her spare time, she enjoys a wide range of crafting activities, participating in triathlons with her husband and is the proud pet parent of two dogs and a cat, Wi-Fi, Jazz, and Smudge.
is the Milieu Manager at Kartini Clinic. She earned a Psychology degree from Westminster College in Missouri and moved to Portland in 1996. Amy resides with her son Beckham, boxer Ruby and her therapy hamster named Pansy. Amy enjoys almost anything outdoors; particularly exploring Oregon’s geology. She spends most of her free time on rock collecting adventures.
is our Kitchen Coordinator. Lindsay grew up in Indiana and attended Purdue University, earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Public Horticulture. In 2006 she packed all of her belongings into her car and headed to Portland. She spends most of her time hanging out with her sweetheart, Sean, and their two cats, Hooligan and Lucile. She enjoys listening to music, singing, dancing, working on puzzles, and and wowing everyone with her extensive knowledge of song lyrics.
is Kartini's Utilization Review Specialist. An Ohio native, Ashley worked in the design industry in New York City between college and graduate school. She also taught college Art History before spending several years in the health insurance field. She enjoys reading, cooking, playing with her dog, and exploring the Pacific Northwest.
Lisa Peacock, LMFT
is a Family Therapist at Kartini Clinic. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in both Oregon and California. She is Founder and Executive Director of The Peacock Foundation an animal assisted therapy program for children in Los Angeles, CA. She is the proud trainer of a menagerie of animals all of whom visit the clients at Kartini Clinic to provide Animal Assisted Interventions.
Emily R. E. Burnett
is an Account Representative in the Business Office. She has a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and has begun coursework on a Master's in Public Health. She is also a professional choral musician and pianist. In her spare time, Emily enjoys spending time with her husband and three young daughters, and hiking around the Pacific Northwest.
is Kartini Clinic's Cook. She is an avid reader. Anything she can get her hands on will eventually be read and possibly reread if time allows. She reads anything from sci-fi to historical fiction and loves books about living in foreign countries. These books fuel her love of travel. Caitlin grew up on a small cherry orchard that her grandfather owned. Growing up next door to her grandparents allowed for an education in cooking and baking. By an early age Caitlin was cooking for her family or helping her grandmothers with holiday baking. Living on an orchard encouraged her to learn about food. She maintains a garden every year and keeps chickens for fresh eggs. After moving to Portland Caitlin trained under a head baker and went on to manage a bakery for many years.
is working with schools throughout the Northwest to help them support Kartini students as they strive to smoothly transition out of, and back into, their hometown schools. Mary is a licensed Oregon school administrator and teacher with many years of experience. She had led schools through accreditation, taught at the graduate level, and published articles about learning. Mary has a Master’s degree from Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Her favorite activities include reading, skiing, and hiking up mountains with her dog, Boomer. Mary and her husband are the proud parents of two children: one currently in college and one recent college graduate.
is one of Kartini Clinic's Milieu Counselors. Originally from Hawaii, she attended the University of Washington in Seattle and now joins us in Portland to get her feet wet in the medical field before pursuing a Mental Health Therapy Certification. Most recently a social worker, Sandra is passionate about helping people. An adrenaline junkie at heart, she loves to travel, explore museums, get lost in ruins and jump off cliffs. She's been in many theater productions, a 50/60's cover band and will karaoke your socks off.
Alex Garcia, MA
is one of our Milieu Therapists in the Partial Hospitalization Program at Kartini Clinic. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Sam Houston State University, and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Webster University in the Netherlands. Alex has experience with case management, as well as clinical group experience serving patients with intensive psychiatric illnesses. He enjoys singing with Portland's Oregon Repertory Singers and like many people who live in the PNW, he loves hiking, camping, backpacking, river days, exploration of Portland's beautiful surroundings, and dogs!
Nick Van Marter
is one of Kartini Clinic's Medical Assistants. Nick grew up in Portland, and received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from St. John's University in Minnesota. After graduating, he started out as one of our Research Interns, and he continues to research in his spare time here. Much of Nick's time outside of the clinic is spent playing soccer, which he has played since he was young. He also enjoys travelling and is always up for a good game of chess.
is one of Kartini Clinic’s Medical Assistants. She recently received her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from Oregon State University. Mary is a Portland native that loves to travel in her free time. She is a concert goer and loves connecting with people. She enjoys walks on the beach, hikes, nature and spending time with her family and friends.
Claire Stanton, LPC
is the Intensive Outpatient Therapist at Kartini Clinic. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from University of Oregon and her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University. Claire has a wide range of clinical experience including serving individuals, adolescents, couples, and families in both outpatient and inpatient settings. She is a world traveler who enjoys the outdoors, reading, going on walks, and spending time with her husband while they plan their next trip.
Ellen Landis, MA
is one of our Milieu Therapists in the Partial Hospitalization Program at the Kartini Clinic. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Oregon and received her Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Lewis and Clark college. Ellen has previously worked in an outpatient co-occurring mental health and substance abuse facility in addition to group therapy with offenders of domestic violence. She enjoys rainy days, playing tennis, reading, and baking treats for family and friends.
is a Medical Office Assistant at Kartini Clinic. She just received her Associates in Science from BYU-ID and is now working on her Bachelors in Psychology from Hawaii Pacific University. Alexa is a Portland native who recently moved back from San Diego. Alexa speaks Spanish fluently and in the past has worked as a medical interpreter for physicians. She enjoys skydiving, cliff jumping and spending time with her husband and two dogs, Chevy and Lola.
Diana Honorat, OTD, OTR/L
completed her post-professional clinical doctorate in occupational therapy from St. Catherine University and moved from Florida to assume a clinical assistant professor position at Pacific University. Her background is in pediatric occupational therapy—working in various settings including in outpatient, and school. You will find Diana supervising fieldwork students, providing services for children and adolescents with eating disorders at the Kartini Clinic, and teaching courses at Pacific University. In her spare time, Diana enjoys trying a new recipe, teaching or practicing yoga, reiki and meditation, or being of service. She loves spending time with her husband and little girl exploring their surroundings through nature-based activities.
is the school teacher at Kartini Clinic where he ensures that each kid undergoing treatment continues to keep abreast of their education while away from school. He graduated with honors from Portland State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. At PSU, Roy taught both freshmen and conducted qualitative research. Roy also has extensive, ongoing clinical volunteer experience, formally mentoring patients undergoing bone marrow transplant. Upon graduating high school, Roy fled his rural roots to investigate life in urban Manhattan, Toronto, and, eventually, Portland.
Nicole Shaw, MA
is Kartini’s Art Therapist in the Partial Hospitalization Program. Nicole earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Swinburne University and Master’s degree in Art Therapy at Latrobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Nicole has been a practicing Art Therapist for 10 years in Australia and has worked with adults, adolescents, and families in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Nicole is loving the Pacific Northwest and enjoys art nights with friends, exploring thrift stores, live music, and swimming under waterfalls.
